Batik is an Indonesian cultural heritage recognized by UNESCO as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity since October 2, 2009. But do you know the long history of batik in the archipelago?

Origins of Batik in Indonesia

The history of batik in Indonesia is closely related to the development of the Majapahit Kingdom and the spread of Islam in Java. Batik has been known since the Majapahit era and flourished in the palaces of Solo and Yogyakarta.

The word batik comes from Javanese amba meaning to write and titik meaning dot. So batik literally means writing with dots.

Batik in the Royal Era

Initially, batik was only made for the palace and nobility. Classic batik motifs like Parang, Kawung, and Sidomukti have deep philosophical meanings and could only be worn by the royal family.

Batik in the Modern Era

Entering the 20th century, batik became widely known by the public. The batik industry grew rapidly in cities like Pekalongan, Solo, Yogyakarta, Cirebon, and Lasem. Pekalongan is known as the City of Batik.

UNESCO Recognition

UNESCO recognition in 2009 marked a turning point for Indonesian batik. Every October 2 is celebrated as National Batik Day.

Today batik is known not only as traditional fabric but also as formal, casual, and international fashion.

Conclusion

The history of Indonesian batik is a long journey from the palaces to world recognition. As the next generation, it is our responsibility to preserve this cultural heritage.
